“The Loisaida is sometimes known as the ghetto supermarket, where street hustling is the way of survival, a way of life…”
Take ten minutes from your day and watch this awesome vintage video, courtesy of blogger compatriot Flaming Pablum. Entitled simply Viva Loisaida, the rare film explores the Lower East Side of October 1978, “giving a brief preview before gentrification occurred.”
Colorful street scenes (e.g. Tompkins Square Park, the Christodora House, bombed-out tenements) are accompanied by narration and cutaways to various local activists of the time. We hear about common landlord practice and the demographics of the neighborhood. It’s a brilliant street-level glimpse from thirty-four years ago.
Viva Loisaida was filmed by Marlis Momber in October 1978, and produced by “Gruppe Dokumentation” & “Tylis.”
