Project Peace non-profit program for youth where I work as a teaching artist. Using a macbook and the recording software program Ableton Live I have a mobile recording studio for students to record their original lyrics in the classroom. At first I was stumped. How can the yoga and hip hop combine to create a fun experience for the youth but still allow them to express their views on social justice and police brutality. To allow them to express what that they are witnessing every day in their neighborhoods. We eventually found a common ground. According to Pananjali's Yoga Sutras the "Yamas" are 1 of the 8 Limbs of Yoga. Yamas (Universal Principal's to Live by) consist of "Ahimsa" which means non-violence in thought word or deed. I know it's a lot to understand. . that is why my students simplified it in a Hip Hop song Inspired by a commercial "trap music" song. The chorus is: Ahimsa Means Non-Violence That means no war and no fighting All the negative thoughts I silence Do positive deeds that's how I live. Sing along with us. Keep in mind this is the student's first time creating a song like this and recording.
